Counseling News from the Week of May 29, 2026
Explanation: Although I scan the Internet primarily for counseling articles, in the process I run across quotes and interesting facts that I sometimes include in these first two sections.
This week has been a scant week as far as counseling articles, so I’ve included a few more items I found interesting in Sections 1 and 2. If you’re just interested in the counseling articles, you can skip these first two sections and go directly to the section called Counseling Articles. HV

Surgeon General Advisory Warns About Screen Time for Children
Although confidence in government guidance may be limited, I believe these recommendations are still worth considering, even if families do not follow them exactly. I suspect many parents are not coming close to the suggested limits. At the exercise room where I work out, for example, I occasionally see a parent exercising while keeping a one-year-old in a bassinet occupied with a screen. I also doubt that most parents limit children under age 6 to just one hour of screen time per day. Doing so would require encouraging young children to spend more time on other activities such as reading books and playing outside. The recommended limits are no screen time for children younger than 18 months, less than one hour per day for children under 6, and no more than two hours per day for those ages 6 to 18.

One Reason Men Are Less Marriageable: Low-Cost Sex
Some are complaining about the dearth of marriageable men, but this article puts the blame on both sexes. Many women are not willing to marry in their 20s, but are willing to have sex, even with men they do not believe are marriage material. Therefore low-cost sex, in the form of sex with women and pornography are available.
There is also a failure of young men “to launch”—young men still living with their parents and not going to college or working. So the real answer may be helping both young men and women change their thinking—young marriages are okay and often fulfilling, even if the couple has not completed their education, and it is important for parents to help their sons think about further education, a career, and starting and supporting a family. Blaming the situation on only one gender is neither fair nor helpful.

Spencer Pratt is right — the homeless problem is mostly about drugs
Homelessness is a complicated problem, and compassionate people do want to improve it. But understanding what causes homelessness is important. Studies in many cities show that the majority who are homeless are abusing drugs and alcohol, and do not seek treatment or homeless shelter even if it is offered. Those who are homeless because of personal misfortune often go to homeless shelters, often with their families, and once they have found jobs, often leave shelters and become self-sufficient again.
So understanding these two different groups is very important.
