Psychedelics may improve mental health by getting inside nerve cells
Some new research may give us insights into why medically-controlled psychedelics may improve mental health. Apparently some psychedelic may get inside brain cells in the cortex and instruct new neurons to grow. Although this research is still several steps away from clinical applications in humans, it may eventually lead to treatments for things like depression.

Trans athletes should compete — but not against biological women
This editorial, by Kirsten Fleming, makes a point that would seem to be common sense—that girls and young women should not have to put their health and safety at risk, and should not lose sports competitions unfairly, by having to compete against males who have gone through pubertyas males and now decided to identify as females in order to be eligible to compete in women’s competitions.

Meet the 'glass-half-full girl' whose brain rewired after losing a hemisphere
I believe I ran a story about Mora a few years ago. Here is an update and it’s fascinating. In the third trimester of her mother’s pregnancy, the left side of Mora’s brain had a massive stroke, which was undiagnosed at the time. At birth she appeared normal, but within a few months she was having hundreds of epileptic seizures each day. The doctors decided that the best option was to remove the left half of her brain, but they weren’t sure what would happen as a result.
Here is a description of her life since (she is now 15). It has taught us much about neuroplasticityin the brain and will continue to do so as she continues to mature.

Study Confirms Physical Exercise Should Be First Choice for Mental Health Treatment
This is a large meta analysis of the best studies on helping people combat anxiety, depression and psychological distress. It was compiled by several Australian researchers. Usually we are told to use medication and counseling first, and then exercise as a complementary treatment. What these researchers found, combining the results of many studies, is to encourage clients to start with exercise first, and then add counseling and pharmaceuticals later if needed. They also found that short periods of High Intensity exercise were most effective, but for people for whom high intensity exercise was not wise, that normal exercise was second best. So perhaps when people come to us for counseling, encouraging them to start exercising should be higher on our priority list. And for those who don’t have the money to start counseling immediately, encouraging them to exercise while they secure the necessary finances could be very helpful. In case you doubt my summary, please read this summary of their findings yourself.

I cannot give you a web address to read this article because it comes from a British newspaper that requires a subscription. Melatonin a New Way to Reduce Self-Harm?
Melatonin is produced naturally in our bodies in the evening and helps people fall asleep. As people get older their bodies produce less melatonin, so older people often take melatonin just before going to bed to help them sleep. Teens with psychological problems are more likely than other teens to have difficulty sleeping, and frustration at not being able to sleep sometimes leads to self-harm. So melatonin (which seems to be quite safe) is reportedly being tried as a way of reducing self-harm.
