Interesting Quotes about Families (and other things)

Families are like fudge — mostly sweet, with a few nuts.

    Les Dawson

Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city.

    George Burns

The family — that dear octopus from whose tentacles we never quite escape, nor, in our inmost hearts, ever quite wish to.

    Dodie Smith

No one's family is normal. Normalcy is a lie invented by advertising agencies to make the rest of us feel inferior.

    Claire LaZebnik

I grew up in a very large family in a very small house. I never slept alone until after I was married.

    Lewis Grizzard

The thing about family disasters is that you never have to wait long before the next one puts the previous one into perspective.

    Robert Brault

    Interesting Quotes Not About Families

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.

    William James

Change is inevitable in life. You can either resist change and potentially be swept away by it — or you can cooperate with it, adapt to it, and benefit from it.

    Jack Canfield

In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future.

    Eric Hoffer

He that falls in love with himself will have no rivals.

    Benjamin Franklin

If you just set out to be liked, you will be prepared to compromise on anything at any time and would achieve nothing."

    Margaret Thatcher

    Fascinating Facts

Where is the geographic center of the continental United States?

Many states consider themselves the heartland of America, but where exactly is the geographic center of the continental U.S.? It is a nondescript field north of Lebanon, Kansas (located at 39° 50' 00" N 98° 35' 00" W). Not much marks this otherwise typical stretch of Midwestern farmland, except for a nearby historical marker noting that the location was determined by the U.S. Geological Survey, and that the point is “where a plane map of the 48 states would balance if it were of uniform thickness.” (Source: InterestingFacts.com)

Your femur can support 30 times the weight of your body.

Overengineering, designing something so that it can support more than it’s ever expected to have to bear, is a commonly-used feature in bridges and other structures. An example from Creation is the human femur. (Source: InterestingFacts.com).

At One Time Some People Protested the Statue of Liberty

When the Statue of Liberty was first unveiled in 1886 some women’s groups were against it. Their protests are understandable. At that time women in America did not have the right to vote, and they protested that to portray liberty as a female was ironic (Source: HistoryFacts.com).

Long-Term Use of ADHD Meds and CVD Risk: New Data

You may have seen this headline, or your ADHD clients may have seen it and wondered whether they should discontinue their ADHD medication. If you read the entire study you’ll find that long-term use of stimulant medication is associated with a small but statistically significant risk of some cardiovascular issues, and non-stimulant medication for ADHD is associated with different cardiovascular issues. However, almost every medication has some tradeoffs as far as benefits and medical issues, and wise doctors and patients should weigh one against the other. The important thing is not to see the headline and make an impulsive decision to stop one’s medication, but instead to talk with one’s doctor and make an informed decision about what is best for this particular client.

This editorial is from the New York Post, which is a competitor to the New York Times.
