“The human eye is a biological wonder. Able to perceive the subtle hues of 1 million colors and filled with tens of millions of photosensitive rods and cones, our eyes help interpret reality for us — but they’d be useless without a muscle called the orbicularis oculi. A sphincter muscle arranged in concentric bands around both eyelids, the orbicularis oculi controls blinking, and drains tears from the eye to the nasolacrimal duct system (which eventually drains into the nasal cavity). These functions are essential to happy and healthy eyes, as they clear particles from the surface, lubricate the eyes, and supply oxygen to the corneas. Without this crucial muscle, our corneas would swell, our eyes would dry out, and eventually we’d go blind.

California audiologist who stabbed boyfriend 108 times in ‘cannabis-induced psychosis’ gets a slap on the wrist
In a case that has created controversy from both sides a woman in California and her boyfriend were both using marijuana. Supposedly, because today’s marijuana is much stronger, it can in some cases produce psychosis, and in this psychosis she stabbed her boyfriend 108 times, killing him. She apparently also killed her dog and stabbed herself, and had to be forcibly subdued by police, resulting in several bones in her arm being broken before she let go of the knife. Apparently the judge did believe that she was in a psychosis and therefore was given two years’ probation and one hundred hours of community service. Cannabis-induced psychosis is a new phenomenon: there will probably be continued controversy over this diagnosis and sentence for some time to come.

Helping Addicts Avoid Rock Bottom Without Enabling
This is an interesting article and makes a good point—the best way to get an addict into treatment is not confrontation or making them hit rock bottom. It is “speaking the truth in love.” The article recommends a new approach, called Craft. It has a 70% success rate in getting addicts into treatment in a supportive way. I think an even better way is the Johnson Intervention, which has a 95% success rate. If you’re not familiar with it, I recommend reading the book “Love First” by Jeff and Debra Jay.

Lawmakers Want to End SSI Marriage Penalty for People With Developmental Disabilities
People with developmental disabilities who are both on SSI faced a penalty if they wished to marry someone else with a developmental disability who was also on SSI. Now a bipartisan bill is making its way through Congress that would remove this penalty. It’s certainly easier to face difficulties when you have a partner. Let’s pray this bill is passed and signed into law.
